MORE MODAL VERBS MAY/ MIGHT/ AND COULD ABILITY CAN/COULD

Modal verbs 

Probability :

*we  use  May / might / and could  to say that something is possible , but  not  certain .

-They  may come by car ( = Maybe They will come by car ).
- They  might be  at home ( = Maybe  They are  at  home)
-  If we don't hurry, we could be late ( = Maybe we will be late)


* We use can to make general statements  about what is possible.

- It can be very cold here in winter (= It is sometimes very cold here in winter)
- You can easily get lost in this town. ( = People often get lost in this town )

BE  CAREFUL

* We  do not use can to talk about specific events :

A: Where's John?
B: I'm not sure . He may / might / could be  in his office .


Notice the difference in meaning between can and may/might/Could be .

That  dog can be  dangerous. (= sometimes that dog is dangerous .I know ) 

That dog may/ might / could be dangerous (=Perphaps  that dog is dangerous. I don't know )

*complete the sentences with can or   may/ might/ could 

1.- I  don't know where Eliza is .She might be in her office .
2.- Eliza's good boss.But she may be difficult sometimes .
3.- We  can  invite Filip to dinner tonight , but I think he can be too tired.
4.- Don't feed that dog. You don't know where  it's from. It ........ be dangerous .
5.-Sometime, the temperature in Antartica  ............ be  less than  - 50ºC.
6.-Please,don't tell John about or meeting. He ............ be angry .k tonight 
7.-There are many different types of tea . It ...........  be  white , yellow , green , or  black .
8.- I .............  join you if it finish early .
9.- He ...........  call  you  back  tonight .
10.-....................  you  please  pass me  that book over there ?
11.-When  he was young he .............. dance  all night  long . 
12.- Children ...........  bring  their  teddy  bears to school.

Ability :

* We use can and can't to talk about someone's skill or  general abilities.

- She can speak several languages .
- He can swim like a fish.
- They can't dance very well.

* We use can and  can't to talk about the ability to do something at a specific  time in the present .

- I can see you.
- Help! I can't breathe.

*We use Could and Couldn't to talk about  the past .

- She could speak several  languages .
- I couldn't  see  you .

* Use can / can't could/couldn't and ifiniive to complete each sentence.

 Speak /  swim / find / taste / read / smell / play /see


1.- Rob can speak polish really well. He sounds  like a native .
2.- When i was a girl , I could  swim 10 Kilometres .
3.-The police searched the whole illage for the criminal , but they couldn't .........   him.
4.- Are you sure you put sugar in my tea ? I honestly ............................ it!
5.-My great-grandfather was a very clever man , but he ...................   or write.
6.-Did you remember to turn  off  cooker ? I ............................... something  burning . 
7.- Tim's  a  big  football fan , but he............................. any more . He's too old .
8.- The children ......................... that the teacher was very angry .
