Grammar countable and uncountable nouns :
There are two kinds of noun in English : countable nouns and uncountable nouns .
- Countable nouns are things you can count. They are singular or plural : a banana , an apple, potatoes
- Uncountable nouns are things you can't count in English : water , rice , bread They never are plural .
- Drinks are usually uncountable : coffee , tea , juice but you can say a juice .( = a glass of juice ) or three coffees ( = three cups of coffee) .
- It is also possible to use containers with the noun to show quatity : a glass of water , two packets of rice .
Nouns with a/an , some , any
-Use a/ an + singular countable noun : I've got an apple .
- Use some + plural countable noun or uncountable noun in positive sentences : We' ve got some vegetables .
-Use any + plural countable noun or uncountable noun in questions and negative sentences to ask about things : Have you got any sweets ? We haven`t got any coffee .
-Usuaally use some (NOT any ) + in plural countable noun or uncountable noun in questions to ask for things or to offer something to a person : Can I have some coffee ? Do you want some tea ?
Nouns with a/an , some , any
-Use There + is / are + some + singular / plural countable noun to say something exists : there's a bottel of water . there are some carrots .
- Use there + is + some + uncountable noun in the singular to say something exists : There's some milk.
- Use there isn't + any + plural countable noun or uncountable to say something dosen't exist : there isn't a cucumber in the fridge .
- Use there aren't + any + plural countable noun or uncountable noun to say dosen't exist : There aren't any tomatoes . There isn't any butter .
-Use Is + there + a/an + a singular countable noun to ask about something dosen't exist : Is there a bottle of orange juice in the fridge ?
- Use Are + there + any + plural countable noun or uncountable noun to ask about something: Are there any apples ? Is there any salad ?
